For Christmas 2014, Jeffrey and I collaborated on a Christmas single, called “Hey Wise Man.” It’s free for you to download and/or stream online.

About “Hey Wise Man”

The lyrics (written by Jeffrey Kranz) are as follows:

It started outside this land:
I was sleeping in the desert sand;
I was dreaming that dream so grand,
But I never got the upper hand.
Then I heard the bells ringing out west;
They said a mother was loved and blessed
And they sang about joy and rest;
Joy and rest;
The bells sang,

“Hey, wise man – follow that star!
Do you know who you are?
Do you know who you are?
Hey, wise man, callous and cold,
Did you come for the gold?
Did you go for the golden?”

I tried to tell someone else
What I was hearing in the Roman bells
But it didn’t turn out too well;
She said I only cared about myself.
So I packed up and disappeared,
Into the bottomless, wild frontier,
But I heard the bells crystal clear,
Crystal clear; the bells sang,

“Hey, wise man – follow that star!
Do you know who you are?
Do you know who you are?
Hey, wise man, walking the night,
Did you do what was right?
Did you do what was right?”

I listened to the church bells ring;
And I discovered what made them sing;
They were ringing for a newborn King,
So I looked around for something to bring.
Something valuable to confer,
Like frankincense, gold, and myrrh,
But He said to me, “As you were,
As you were.”
The King said,

“Hey, wise man – follow that star!
Do you know who you are?
Do you know who you are?
Hey, wise man – seek and you’ll find;
Is your heart on the line?
Is your heart on the line?

Do you know who you are?
Do you know who you are?”

The arrangement is entirely a cappella, from the bells to the kick drum: a total of eleven parts.  For those of you curious about the breakdown of the arrangement, here are all the parts:

Melody: Jeffrey
Soprano harmony: Laura
Alto harmony: Laura
Soprano bells: Laura
Alto bells: Laura
Rhythmic alto: Laura
Bass: Jeffrey
Hi-hat: Laura
Snare: Laura
Toms: Laura
Kick: Jeffrey

I’m confident in my composing and arranging skills, but recording is another animal. With my limited digital audio equipment (that stuff’s expensive) and only rudimentary knowledge of recording practices (that takes a lot of work), I’ll own up to the fact that the sound quality could use some work.

If you’re an audio geek, please accept my apologies for the shortcuts I took. It will probably pain my future self just as much as it pains you.
