2017 creative projects: what I’m working on

I’ve got an ambitious number of creative projects I hope to make happen in 2017. And I’ll be tracking them on this page throughout the year.

You’re welcome to follow along, and fill me in in the comments on what you’ll be working on, too.

Art projects

Art goals

I’ve come to learn that one of the biggest inhibitors to my creative process is simply this: my art is piling up in my closet. And I feel a frustrating sense of clutter-induced guilt when I go to make more of it. I need to do something about this problem.

In 2017, I plan to create 100+ art pieces.

In order to do that, I need to also give 50 or more of them away.

One-off art pieces

I’m creating art pieces that are otherwise not part of a series. So far, they include:

You can click the links above to learn more about each piece, or you can browse them in a simple gallery below.

Quick-drawing fundraiser

So far in 2017, I participated in a fundraising event where I created drawings in front of a crowd. Participants traded fundraising tickets they purchased for art pieces of their choice (some custom made in front of them). At this event, I created 24 art pieces and gave away 11.

I wasn’t able to snap pictures of the ones I gave away, but I did manage to capture the 13 I took home with me at the end in the gallery below.

Proverbs 30 art pieces

I’ve been working on a series since the beginning of 2015 where I draw my way through chapter 30 of the book of Proverbs. Each drawing is small, made with graphite, and relatively surreal. These are the drawings so far:

Theme verse drawings

Long, long ago I began a project to draw out one Bible verse from each book of the Bible. I fizzled out on it in 2016, and started it back up again in 2017. This series puts me out of my comfort zone, leveraging a style that I don’t really feel belongs to me. But I’m determined to finish what I started.

Writing projects

Writing

I’ve undertaken more and more writing projects in the last year, and learned that I’m not as bad at it as I’d always assumed. I’ve been working on a big project: co-writing a book on email marketing with Tyrel Tjoelker. We hope to complete it and publish it in 2017.

In addition to that, I’d like to sustain the habit of writing regularly. In 2017 I’d like to write 100,000 words of content that gets published on the web. (And no, projects that never see the light of day, like NaNoWriMo, won’t count.)

  • Book completion 70%
  • Published words (out of 100,000) 25%

Writing highlights

So far a few cool things have happened this year:

  • One of my Quora answers about what gets people of average intelligence perceived as more intelligent got featured on Inc.
  • I wrote a think piece on the human need for attention that has generated some interesting discussion.
Music projects

Music

There are a lot of music projects in the hopper in 2017, and I’m excited about it.

During 2017, I completed my second album, Copenhagenism. My plan was to release it in early April. Success!

I’m also planning to create and record a total of 20 original songs. Some of these will be part of AnthemBible: the Psalms, others will be for fun, and others will be in preparation for my next album … whatever that ends up being.
